August’s Designer of the Month – Nell Ziroli

2016 is the “Year of the Designer” for Feel Good Yarn Company.  The first Thursday of every month we will feature an interview with one of our favorite knitwear designers and the following week we will release a pattern designed exclusively for our SilverSpun® yarn by that designer.

On August 18, 2016 we will be releasing the pattern that Nell designed using SilverSpun® Sport to our subscribers.  Be sure to sign up here so you don’t miss it.

Nell Ziroli, from Nell Knits, is our August Designer of the Month.  I first became aware of Nell and her beautiful designs when I spotted her Arvid sweater in Brooklyn Tweed's Wool People, Volume 7 (I've always been a sucker for cables.)  Since then, we have become friendly and have even taught together at a knitting retreat in southern Virginia.  I'm very excited to have Nell as this month's designer and can't wait to reveal her beautiful design next week.  You can find Nell on Ravelry, Instagram and her blog, Nell Knits.

And with that, I give you Nell ….

Can you give us a little background intel on yourself? Where were you born? Do you still live there? How long have you been knitting? Who taught you to knit?

I was the first child born to high school sweethearts. My father was newly enlisted in the Navy, so we were rather transient, living a year or 3 in each of the many places he was stationed. We all lived in Virginia Beach when I finished school and moved out on my own. I’ve recently returned to Virginia, after a 6 week visit to Atlanta that lasted 10 years.

Handwork has been in my life as long as I can remember. My mother (bless her patient heart) taught me to knit, and even managed to hold on to a few pieces of my early work despite all of our moves. Also, my dad still has a rather spiffy yellow garter stitch tie that might have been a Father’s Day gift I made when I was 10 or 12.

Where do you do your designing? Do you have a special room in your house, a studio, a favorite chair?

I don’t really have a specific work or design space set up here. My best ideas come while I’m doing most anything - even sleeping, so I try to have paper and pencil everywhere. I find that when I’m looking for a specific answer to a project another project will develop. It’s a blessing and a curse.

Where do your design inspirations come from? Nature, architecture, fine art, what?

We are lucky to be in a makers paradise right now, with so many genius designers, authentic inspirers and amazing yarns - all just a click away.  My favorites tend to be in the less is more camp. Unless were talking cables.

While designing your piece for FGYCo, what qualities of SilverSpun® did you find most appealing?

For my design, SilverSpun® was truly the perfect yarn. The elasticity allows "Happy Hands" to fit every teen/adult that has tried them on. I also love that for a somewhat textured yarn, the stitch definition is crisp. I tried, but was unsuccessful in capturing a clear photo of the glistening silver fibers as I knit outdoors on the porch this early summer.
